Né en 1932 à Paris, fils d'un compositeur et chef d'orchestre, il joue du piano dès son plus jeune âge.
Sa carrière commence dans le jazz avant le cinéma : dans les années 50, il travaille comme accompagnateur et arrangeur. Son disque I Love Paris est un gros succès aux USA en 1954, et sur son album Legrand Jazz en 1959, il joue avec John Coltrane et Miles Davis. Dans le même temps, il s'essaie à la musique de film. Il rencontre Jacques Demy et compose la partition de Lola (1961). Leur collaboration deviendra légendaire : il composera les bandes originales de tous les films de Jacques Demy à l'exception de Une chambre en ville (1982).
Dans les années 60, il composera pour Agnès Varda (Cléo de 5 à 7), Jean-Luc Godard (Vivre sa vie, Bande à part), Chris Marker (Le Joli mai), William Klein (Qui êtes-vous Polly Maggoo ?), Jean-Paul Rappeneau (La Vie de château)... Et évidemment Demy, avec Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (entièrement...
