Description
The elephant is the largest living land animal.
It lives in highly structured social groups.
In forest areas where vegetation is abundant, the herds move relatively little, but in dry areas such as the Sahelian countries, they nomadise over long distances, following routes that remain the same each year.
Elephants are strict herbivores: they feed exclusively on plants. But their diet varies considerably depending on the regions they travel (from equatorial forests to pre-deserts) and according to the time of year (from dry seasons to tropical rains).
Elephants eat all kinds of plants: they mow the grass in clumps, plucking it with their trunks in regular strokes, take the richest and most tender parts of thorny bushes, attack the leaves of trees. It has even been observed that they sometimes cut down the acacia trees to savor the upper branches, apparently much more appetizing than the accessible branches...
